They're scouting Firebase Charlie. That's where the enemy comm station for AC130 support is located. They take the comm station they disrupt enemy air-to-ground support and provide a means to give their boys some friendly AC130 support. So far the enemy has been guarding Charlie very well. The enemy took out a friendly chopper that was dispatched to give them fire support, and saving the downed pilots is their secondary objective.
